GIS Technician is the first working level job class in the GIS class series. GIS Technicians are responsible for entering and updating data used to create digital GIS database layers and maps. One year of progressively responsible GIS experience administering and operating GIS applications software to develop GIS data, digital maps, or other digital displays for land use or spatial analysis; OR; 2. An associate's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in geography, earth sciences, civil engineering, urban planning, information technology, biology with an emphasis in GIS, computer science, or a closely related field; OR; 3. Successful completion of a college-level GIS certificate program. NOTE: If applicants wish to use the college education requirement (#2) to qualify, then they must submit a copy of an official or unofficial transcript from an accredited U.S college or university, or a copy of a certified foreign studies equivalency at the time of application. If applicants wish to qualify under the GIS Certificate requirement (#3), then they must attach a copy of this certificate at the time of application. These documents can be attached to the application during Step 1 or scanned and emailed to **** EVALUATION PROCESS The evaluation process for GIS Technician will consist of an initial application screening for minimum qualifications; a written examination weighted 70%; and a rating of the supplemental application questions weighted 30%. The written examination is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, 2013. Applicants will receive an e-mail invitation notification stating the exact time and location of the written examination. This notice will be sent at least ten calendar days prior to the date of the exam. Invitations to take the written examination will be determined by the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire form using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process and pass the exam, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying. The written examination will consist of multiple-choice questions designed to measure the following areas: Knowledge of GIS terminology, methods, techniques, and processes. Knowledge of cartography. Knowledge of modern computer software used in an office environment. Ability to establish and maintain effective customer service and interpersonal relations. Written communications skills. Upon successfully passing the written examination, applicants will be placed on an eligibility list for (12) twelve months.
