Job Description Summary Fulfill the need for remote sensing-focused research with a strong focus on mathematical, statistical, and programming capabilities. Candidates will need to apply analytical skills to projects needing a variety of imagery analysis, GIS , and code-writing opportunities in a collaborative research environment that includes a strong Great Lakes focus. The position is based at Michigan Tech Research Institute ( MTRI ) in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org). Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) 1. Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research relating to applying technological skills to solving governmental and societal needs, especially for Great Lakes-focused projects. 2. Provide technical assistance for projects needing analytical skills including image analysis and interpretation, mathematics, statistics, and programming. 3. Provide custom analytical coding capabilities to advance analysis projects in more efficient methods. 4. Contribute technical expertise and outreach experience to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports. 5. Present results to sponsor as appropriate. 6. Participate in proposal writing. 7. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervision will be exercised over student interns on a project-by-project basis. Required Education (minimum requirements) Master’s degree (or higher) in remote sensing, GIS , oceanography, or related degree including a strong background in statistics, mathematics, computer science, and/or engineering, and 2 years of experience. OR Bachelor’s degree in remote sensing, GIS , or related science degree including a strong background in statistics, mathematics, computer science, and/or engineering, and 5 years of experience. Required Experience (minimum requirements) Experience with Great Lakes-related research with a remote sensing component, applied to issues such as water quality, lake characteristics, climate change, and related topics. Demonstrated experience with leading remote sensing software such as ENVI IDL, ERDAS Imagine, and/or open source image processing tools including custom script writing for image analysis (such as applying IDL Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis of data using one or more major statistical packages such as SAS SPSS , or R. Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis using advanced mathematical concepts. Desirable Education and/or Experience Demonstrated experience with one or more programming languages, with a focus on object oriented experience (VB. NET , C , C#, Java). Experience in writing and applying KML for geospatial visualization. Previous participation in proposal writing. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, and presentation communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge of common GIS and remote sensing data formats and software platforms and how to apply them, including SAR and optical imagery. Demonstrated ability to mathematically model data using MATLAB Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas at meetings and symposia. Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.
