GIS Technician Jobs

A GIS technician job involves collecting and inputting data into the geographic information system from a variety of different sources. A GIS technician performs data collection of utility assets in the field utilizing manual mapping methods, mobile data terminals, GPS equipment, and mobile mapping software; and updates the GIS based digital or manual as-built work request designs, construction drawings and digital and hard copy information received from governmental agencies or any other digital or manual source as required. A GIS technician utilizes GIS data translation and manipulation software, job design tools, GPS data/asset collection, analyzing and resource tracking tools as needed to maintain the geographic information system. A GIS technician also produces ad-hoc and predefined GIS exhibits and reports from the GIS data using graphic and non-graphic map report generation tools.
A GIS technician requires the ability to perform all duties with a minimum of direct supervision. A GIS technician should possess effective communication skills. Two years GIS experience or training/ certification in the use of GIS applications is required for the job of GIS technician. A GIS technician must be proficient at general GIS terms and map reading, at the beginning level in Excel and Word, also proficient with time management skills.
