Brief Posting DescriptionResponsible for geologic, hydrologic, and related technical aspects of the active and future surface coal mining pit areas that are owned and operated by the Colowyo Coal Company L.P. (Colowyo). All Colowyo activities are founded on sound safety, environmental, engineering, best practice and financial principles. Performs detailed and technical office work, oversees and actively manages field work, and interacts directly with the various Mine and Tri-State Stakeholders to provide needed guidance and to ensure overall Drilling Program objectives are met. Responsible for meeting all assigned objectives of the Technical Services Department, ensuring safety and environmental compliance, performing technical reporting and geologic modeling, and working closely with the appropriate Stakeholders. Will develop scope of work for assigned projects, procure, direct, and schedule the work activities of contractors such as geotechnical and hydrological engineers, drilling contractors, geophysical logging firms, dirt contractors, specialized monitoring well instrumentation firms, and other necessary contracted professionals. All activities will be coordinated working within the Colowyo Technical Services Department.Job RequirementsREQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Training:Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Engineering, Hydrology or related technical field.Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:Team oriented with strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to provide excellent leadership and mentoring.\r
Proficient oral and written communication skills required. Must be able to give effective oral, written, and graphic presentations to a diverse audience including written text, maps and/or PowerPoint presentations.\r
Ability to work independently, keeping management informed of progress and discussing problems that may arise.\r
Ability to multitask and analyze complex issues and provide effective solutions and alternatives.\r
Proficient computer skills with knowledge of and experience with AutoCAD, Carlson, Sedcad, and Microsoft Office Suite.\r
Experience:Eight (8) years of relevant experience involving geologic, hydrologic, and related technical aspects of the active surface mining pit areas.\r
Experience with developing annual drilling programs in advance of mining pit progression including experience with geologic models used to project infill structural and/or core drilling requirements.\r
Other:Willingness to travel, as needed.\r
Must possess a valid driver's license.\r

DESIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Prefer experience with geologic, hydrologic, and related technical aspects of the surface coal mining operations.\r
Preferred computer skills with geologic modeling software specifically Minescape, AutoCad, and Carlson. Additional related software skills a plus.\r

Mental demands: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is required to read, write, perform math at level required for calculations related to geologic, hydrologic, and related technical aspects of the active and future surface coal mining pit areas, analyze data and reports, exercise judgment, develop plans, procedures and goals, and present information to others and work under pressure.\r
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to dust, noise, working at surface coal mine open pit areas and working around large surface coal mining operating equipment.\r

The mining operation is located about25 miles north of Meeker, Colo. approximately 25 miles from the power plant.The mine was originally developed in 1978. Tri-State purchased the mine from Rio Tinto Energy in 2011.Operating as one of the state's largest surface coal production operations, Colowyo Mine's 219 employees produce approximately 2.3 million tons of low sulfur, subbituminous coal annually from a 29,000-acre permitted site. Personnel at the mine use both draglines and truck and shovel operations for removing the overburden and extracting the coal.The coal is extracted, crushed and transported to an on-site rail head, where it is shipped by train to Craig Station's load-out facilities. About five trains, pulling 50 or more 120-ton railcars, make weekly deliveries to the power plant.
