This position involves developing geographic information systems (GIS) and assisting researchers and market developers in applying GIS and modeling to various research and development projects. Principal duties may include: * Data mining, digitizing, scanning, compiling, and refining cartographic maps on environmental, economic, and country/area resources * Working with GIS software such as ArcGIS and ERDAS to analyze geographic and geospatial data, image processing, and link geographic and attribute databases * Creating and managing databases * Assisting in developing program routines to link geographic information to simulation models such as DSSAT and GSSAT * Use of spatial analysis for developing thematic maps for scientific use and for publication * Installing and upgrading hardware and software relating to GIS * Training personnel in the use of GIS resources * Maintaining, upgrading, and documenting metadata, attribute, and geographic databases * Performing a variety of other related duties as required (e.g., performing computer system backups, networking, downloading data, producing reports, preparing visual presentations and graphs, and assisting with greenhouse and field activities) JOB REQUIREMENTS This position requires a broad understanding of geographic analysis, and the ability to apply that knowledge using GIS software packages. This position also requires a general understanding of computer programming and the ability to assist in the development of programs which aid scientists in their research. This job may involve the following: * Ability to modify and use a geographic information system to create digital images of geographic locations * Experience and knowledge of geographic information systems software - ArcGIS. * Knowledge of geography to produce maps and spatial information and provide geographic information to scientists and market developers * Basic knowledge of database management systems and application software (e.g., MSOffice applications) * Working knowledge of computer languages (e.g., C/C , Java, Delphi, Python, R, Fortran) in order to effectively write and manipulate computer programs * Ability to communicate effectively to give presentations to trainees and other IFDC staff * Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and meet schedule deadlines * Basic knowledge of remote sensing, and image processing software for geospatial applications is desirable. * Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a field where GIS is an essential discipline (e.g. geography, forestry, environmental science, agronomy, etc.) and 0-2 years of relevant work experience in GIS, with a concentration in natural resources and planning DIFFICULTY OF WORK This position requires basic knowledge of geography with a functional background in computers. Reference manuals provide guidance on how to use and modify programs. Judgment is used when digitizing a map to ensure that proper coordinates are used. RESPONSIBILITY This position determines what methods or programs to use to complete assigned work within the guidelines provided by the supervisor. Work is generally assigned by project and is reviewed while performing the work and upon completion by the supervisor. Weekly meetings are held with the supervisor to discuss ideas, methods and problems. Errors may result in inaccurate map data which could misrepresent research results. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS Most contacts are made with trainees and co-workers (both national and international) to provide guidance and instructions on how to use the models and the computer programs generated. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT This position requires working in a normal office environment with no unusual demands or exposure to hazardous situations. When digitizing maps, the incumbent is required to spend many hours in front of a computer terminal performing detailed visual work.SDL2017
