The California High-Speed Rail program is the first ever high-speed rail system in the U.S. It will connect the mega-regions of the state, contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment, create jobs and preserve agricultural and protected lands. By 2029, the system will run from San Francisco to the Los Angeles basin in under three hours at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. The system will also extend to Sacramento and San Diego, totaling 800 miles with up to 24 stations.
The California High Speed Rail Authority has awarded WSP the Program Management role within the Rail Delivery Partners (RDP) program delivery team. As a result, we have an immediate opportunity for a GIS Coordinator. This role reports directly to the Planning & Design Technologies Manager at the office of our client, the California High Speed Rail Authority, in Sacramento, CA, and will supervise three staff.
Overall, the GIS Coordinator will collaborate with GIS production staff and developer staff to prioritize tasks, organize processes, produce mapping products, ensure GIS customer needs are being tracked and communicated, and support analytical processes with GIS analytical tools. The role will also work with other Authority consultants to ensure they have their GIS standards and requirements and that they are complying with them. The role will also work with consultants to ensure the GIS portion of contracted deliverables are being provided correctly and on time.
The principal duties of the GIS Coordinator are to:
Coordinate scheduling and completion of GIS project deliverables.
Ensure quality reviews of deliverables.
Identify available and appropriate staff resources to accomplish project tasks.
Record meeting notes including action items. Follow up to ensure action items are getting completed.
Coordinate staff assignments to meet GIS production, administration, and development demands.
Identify potential GIS team/tool beneficiaries within the Authority and collaborate on potential uses.
Communicate to Authority staff regarding GIS standards, protocols and developed tools.
Facilitate responding to GIS data requests made to the authority including setting and enforcing associated protocols.
Draft and maintain a written guidance and standards GIS document as well as contract requirements.
Distribute documentation to consultants.
Review GIS deliverables.
Coordinate between Authority GIS developers and consultants on solutions that both help the consultants provide their GIS work in an efficient way and provides the Authority with the most value.
Develop and enforce Authority GIS internal standards
Perform map production
Perform GIS Analysis using geospatial tools and methodologies and automation through model builder and/or python scripting to extrapolate new information from existing data.
Perform maintenance, updates, and administration of Authority GIS web applications
A bachelor’s degree in Geography, Planning, Environmental or Social Science, or related field (a Master’s degree is a plus)
Candidates should have a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in GIS planning or research-related activities (or equivalent working knowledge/experience) related to preparation of CEQA and/or NEPA documentation for public projects, with emphasis on transportation projects, and have strong written and oral communication skills.
Active professional involvement in URISA, AAG, ASPRS, AGU, CGIS, GITA, or related professional organizations is desirable
Experience working in a team developing web or desktop applications for GIS workflows.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience with Caltrans or other California agencies
