Job Description:
SSAI is seeking a strong scientific programmer to design and develop software to produce new geophysical products. These products will play a key role in determining how future clouds might respond to a changing climate. The work is expected to have a 5-year lifespan in support of scientists and cloud research at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Our ideal candidate has strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C/C or Fortran. The position requires handling a large volume of files in HDF and netCDF formats, including visualizing data products from NASA satellites and models, plus implementing algorithms from the research team. Additionally, there will be close collaboration with research scientists to develop and apply data analysis tools to current research problems.

SSAI is looking for a highly motivated individual with directly-relevant scientific programming and software development experience. Experience in Atmospheric science, particularly with remote sensing algorithms, is highly desirable. We are looking for a proven ability to solve complex problems in a collaborative environment, while the successful candidate will also be expected to work independently in developing software solutions that can be efficiently run in a data production environment.
Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Physical Sciences (Atmospheric, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Geophysics, Physics) or Computer Science
Four years of directly-relevant scientific software development experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Two or more years programming experience in Fortran, IDL, C, and Python in a Linux/Unix environment
Makefile and Linux/Unix shell scripting experience
Proven skills to develop programs in Python, C/C , FORTRAN or other languages
Experience with HDF and other remote sensing data formats
Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to work in a team environment
Ability to independently work through situational issues and use problem solving skills to achieve desired project outcome
Eligibility to work in the US and ability to meet NASA's background investigation requirements for IT and physical access to NASA facilities
Desired Qualifications:
Advanced Degree in Physical Sciences (Atmospheric, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Geophysics, Physics) or Computer Science
Additional years programming experience in Fortran, IDL, C, and Python in a Linux/Unix environment
Experience with machine learning/data mining (courses, sample projects, etc)
Knowledge of NASA data products from Terra, Aqua, CALIPSO, CloudSat satellites
Knowledge of cloud and climate physics
Skills in developing and/or applying data analytics
Ability to develop basic GUI-based applications
