This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 12 months that may be extended for 12 additional months without further competition. The work schedule is intermittent, which refers to a work schedule that is less than full-time and does not have a prescheduled tour of duty. Salary: $128,807 (Step 01) to $164,200 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Research Geologist within the Volcano Science Center (VSC), Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO), some of your specific duties will include: - Carries out research into the processes responsible for volcanic eruptions and leads a VSC-wide program on next-generation hazard mapping. - Develops new ways to integrate and analyze hazardous volcanic processes and phenomena and to effectively communicate these hazards to user communities. - Leads the design of a new generation of hazard maps as digital databases that incorporate multiple data sources. - Inputs range from technical geologic maps and stratigraphic information to probabilistic scenario-based forecasts. - Serves as a liaison with other international organizations who are engaged in similar volcano hazard map modernization programs. Travel Required Occasional travel - Overnight travel of 1-2 nights per month may be required. Qualifications EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR RESEARCH GEOLOGIST: Applicants must meet A or B below. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in \u201cA\u201d above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in \A\ above), plus appropriate experience and\/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in \A\ above. In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service. Experience must show knowledge of determining past and future volcano hazards using advanced geologic methods. Examples include: Preparing preliminary and detailed maps of volcanic hazards and utilizing that information to help guide government officials and the public in their decisions on how to properly respond to volcanic activity; Developing, populating, and using event trees to provide a scientific framework to guide decisions by emergency response officials and needed scientific research in the build-up to an eruption; and Leading a team of multi-disciplinary scientists to achieve common goals in the field of active volcanism and eruption response. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement. Education Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
