Job Description:

SSAI is seeking a motivated and outgoing junior scientist to support science outreach for GLOBE Observer. GLOBE Observer is part of the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program, an international science and education program that provides students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment. GLOBE Observer is an app-based citizen science program that makes it possible for anyone to participate in GLOBE. The scientist will help build and support a strong science user base for GLOBE citizen science data. Among other duties, the scientist will be responsible for the following:

Work with subject matter leads for each GLOBE Observer protocol to identify how best to support scientists' use of citizen science data

Along with subject matter leads, draft and implement an applications plan for GLOBE Observer following NASA guidelines

Update GLOBE Observer website For Scientists sections to serve science community needs

Represent GLOBE Observer at science conferences annually (some travel required)

Provide science-based GLOBE/GLOBE Observer training material to educate partners as needed

Train scientists and applications users on how to obtain GLOBE Observer data with a focus on the NASA community. Specifically: Work with evaluator and protocol science leads to identify best training/support mechanisms (webinar, workshop, training documents, etc.); Manage training logistics (set up webinars, prepare material, etc.); Assist in preparing training agendas and material; Maintain database of scientists

Liaise with the science and applications communities to inform citizen scientists of research needs: Develop coordinated messaging with subject matter leads, scientists, and the GLOBE Observer communications lead; Support citizen scientists (respond to science questions, acknowledge work)

Provide science-based communication material to report back to citizen scientists on how science and application community uses data

Support outreach events and activities as needed, including social media

Conduct research with GLOBE Observer data, with emphasis on mosquito habitat and NASA satellite data

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree in an Earth Science related field and 5 years of experience.

Excellent writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.

Experience with supporting websites and social media for professional organizations.

Experience working with multiple stakeholders to coordinate and advance outreach activities and initiatives.

Proven ability to collaborate and work independently to manage a project within a team.

Desired Qualifications:

Advanced working knowledge of webinar software tools

Experience working with scientific data formats, including common Earth science data formats, such as HDF and NetCDF.

Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) visualizations based on geographic data (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, etc.).
