The City of Austin’s Historic Preservation Office is building a team to identify potential historic buildings, sites, and districts across Austin as part of a historic building scan. This is a singular opportunity to collect data on historic-age buildings at an unprecedented scale in Austin – we anticipate surveying approximately 54,000 buildings across the city to help direct current and future planning and preservation efforts.

Planner I duties will chiefly consist of fieldwork, including classifying building type, architectural style, and historic integrity for buildings that are 45 or more years old, using smartphones and/or tablets and web-based survey tools. Training will be provided, and staff will work in teams. This is a great opportunity to gain or expand fieldwork experience with a groundbreaking project. This is a full-time temporary position anticipated to begin on or around May 30, 2018 and will extend for 12 weeks or until work is completed. Salary range: $18.83-$23.42/hour, depending on qualifications.

The ideal candidate will have:

- Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedures

- Interest in helping to shape Austin’s built environment through good planning

- Strong teamwork skills

- Ability to interact with the curious public answering basic questions about the scan

Pay Range

$18.83-$23.42 per hour

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Researches and reviews urban land development proposals and studies. Provides research information to more senior level planners as requested.

2. Reviews preliminary site plans and prepares comments for zoning, land use, annexation, and variance cases.

3. Meets with members of the public, developers, and other city officials to respond to questions that are relevant to a specific planning area or to planning in general.

4. Provides technical planning assistance to the general public, developers and other city officials.

5. Prepares reports and make presentations at public hearings regarding land use and other planning related initiatives.

6. Reviews subdivision plats and site plans for compliance with local regulations and ordinances.

7. Compiles data/information for reports and cost estimates.

8. Analyzes data to discover patterns and/or discrepancies.

9. Documents data and findings on appropriate forms/logs.

10. Draws plans, diagrams, graphs, tables, charts, and maps using drafting and drawing tools.
