SWCA is seeking an Environmental Inspector/Biological Monitor to support a construction project in Alpine, California. Work hours may vary seasonally, and depending on project needs and your skills. As our Natural Resources team continues to grow, additional opportunities for advancement will be available.
 
This position is hourly and temporary, lasting the duration of the project, which is anticipated to be approximately 6 to 9 months.  Pay is dependent on experience. 
What you will accomplish
Communicate effectively with SWCA project managers, construction crews, and other environmental specialists to complete the field work and reporting requirements. Understand project environmental requirements as outlined in the Final Environmental Impact Report, Monitoring and Reporting Program, as well as other applicable laws and regulations protecting biological resources.
Work closely with CPUC third-party monitors, Client staff, construction contractor staff (including construction supervisors and inspectors), archaeological and Native American monitors and the SWCA Environmental Compliance Supervisor to coordinate field efforts and ensure project compliance with CEQA documents, plans, permits, conditions, and mitigation measures. Coordinate and manage field staff\u2014including scheduling\u2014of pre-construction surveys and monitoring. Conduct environmental compliance inspections, stormwater inspections, biological monitoring, nesting bird surveys, and biological evaluations and assessments. Collect field data, record and identify fauna and flora. Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms. Photograph and take detailed notes of habitats, species, and landforms. Follow industry-leading safety check-in and reporting procedures.
Experience and qualifications for success
Required Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field required
Knowledge of common and special status California fauna and flora is required and experience working in Southern California is a plus
Prior work experience as a lead level environmental inspector and/or lead biologist on a California regulated project
Qualifications and ability to be approved by CPUC to serve as an Environmental Inspector and biologist.

At least two years of field experience in construction monitoring and environmental inspections on electrical infrastructure projects
Experience conducting pre-construction wildlife and nesting bird surveys (including raptors)

Local to the project area to afford maximum flexibility to project work schedule
Prior experience with GIS software (ArcPad) and sub-meter GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection
Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications

Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspection experience and general understanding of erosion control practices
Minimum of four years or field seasons of experience completing biological surveys (including nesting bird and/or raptor surveys), fieldwork, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, and/or construction monitoring; experience in Southern California / San Diego County is preferred
Report or other writing experience
Familiarity with local flora and fauna
