Overall Job Objective Under general supervision, to provide a wide range of duties in the operation and use of Geographic Information System (GIS) to support the Public Works and Planning, Housing and Sustainability departments. The GIS Intern maintains, edits, collects and creates geospatial datasets; generates maps; and performs related duties as required. \u00a0 The term will run from June 1 to December 31st with actual working dates of 6\/4 \u2013 12\/21 due to holidays and weekends. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Creates and edits spatial or non-geospatial data for use in city and departmental GIS databases. Creates GIS data by geo-referencing and digitizing; utilizes Global Positioning System (GPS) to collect or verify the accuracy of GIS data Directly edits, updates, or modifies existing departmental GIS data Converts non-geospatial data from sources such as spreadsheets, paper maps, reports and plat books into digital, geospatial formats 2. Follows data maintenance protocols including file naming and proper directory structure. Participates in developing GIS data standards and operational procedures for departmental GIS applications Schedules regular, periodic quality control data checks of GIS datasets in area of responsibility Creates and maintains comprehensive metadata 3. Designs and produces basic maps in response to various workgroup needs and requests. Utilizes existing map files and templates where available. Communicates with diverse staff on projects to develop cartographic products that accurately depict spatial information. 4. Provides advice to users regarding GIS or other specialized applications. Maintains a high level of customer service including: Technical assistance and support for GIS applications to project team(s) and departmental staff Attends meetings, participates in discussions, and performs related work items as necessary Providing timely response to customer map requests Effective communication with internal and external customers; act with a high level of integrity; and be responsible and accountable for their words and actions 5. Maintains current knowledge of cartography, GIS, remote sensing, visual communication, computer information systems and strategies. Attends trainings, classes, and seminars to improve GIS skills. 6. Other: Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to City property. Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. Generally, duties and responsibilities are listed from most to least critical or time consuming. Qualifications REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated knowledge of and proficient use of Geographic Information Systems, (GIS) software and hardware, including GPS and SDE. Work experience demonstrating the ability and initiative to work independently with minimal supervision; to assume responsibility; to prioritize and resolve problems; to work under pressure; to pay close attention to detail; and to carry tasks to completion. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work tactfully and effectively with workgroups, divisions, departments, governmental agencies, and the general public. Demonstrated computer ability to use databases, and windows. Knowledge of transportation and utilities operations. Proficiency in the use of technology and associated operational systems and applications software. Experience using ArcGIS, Excel and Word. Valid driver's license. Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction record and motor vehicle record. \u00a0 DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS \u2013 In addition to the required minimum qualifications: Knowledge of relational databases, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle database experience and experience using Trimble GPS, AutoCAD and graphics packages such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Supplemental Information WORKING CONDITIONS - Required Physical and Mental Effort, and Environmental Conditions: Physical and Mental Effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting or outside in or adjacent to the roadway. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and\/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Work Environment: Works in a clean, comfortable office environment. Also works outside, which includes regularly working in or adjacent to the roadway. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Machines and equipment used include, but are not limited to the following: Uses standard office equipment including personal computers, telephones, calculators and copy\/fax machines. Also uses vehicle, measuring devices, GPS hardware, digital camera and scanners.
