GIS Internship Jobs
A GIS intern creates and maintains GIS datasets for spatial data and metadata. A GIS intern works with a project team to migrate current project data to an Arc GIS system. These projects may involve local, national, or international operations. A GIS intern’s responsibilities include geo-modeling, spatial analysis, base map elements, and presentation map creation and all areas of research, coding, and updating in compliance with data management unit (DMU) practices. A GIS intern maintains and enhances existing custom applications, perform a variety of validations weekly to maintain database integrity. GIS intern monitors, detects, and corrects errors, both graphic and non graphic according to DCP practice and maintenance of the LION file. A GIS intern participates in complete training process. A GIS intern develops a database of geographic and socio-economic information. A GIS intern produces cross-tabulations and conducts a basic statistical analysis of datasets.
A bachelor’s degree in computer science, geography, GIS, remote sensing program, or related field is usually required for a GIS internship job. Knowledge of ArcGIS or a comparable GIS software package is also required. Strong data management skills and experience with Excel is required for a GIS internship job. Prior knowledge of census data and statistical packages like Strata, SAS, or SPSS is a plus.
