Most candidates for a GIS consultant job require to be well versed in ESRI, Maximo MXES, ArcGIS desktop and server technology as well as in Map Guide Enterprise. The candidate must have in-depth knowledge of other GIS (MapInfo, CadCorp, etc) applications.

The candidate for a GIS consultant job must be able to work in a high-profile consultancy role with client contact. The candidate for a GIS consultant job must also be able to manage projects. He or she needs to be well seasoned in technical GIS experience such as spatial analysis, data management, and software development as well as with .NET and software development using Visual Studio, .NET 2008, Java, XML, J2EE, UML etc. The candidate must have profound knowledge of modular software design and object-oriented design (OOD) as well as object-oriented programming (OOP) principles. The candidate for a GIS consultant job must be able to install, manage, and develop web-based mapping using ArcIMS/ArcGIS Server. The candidate must be familiar with image processing, database design, 3D computer graphics, visualization technologies, modeling, and simulation.

A GIS consultant job demands many duties as well as responsibilities besides personal technical proficiency. The candidate provides technical consulting and manages teams. He or she provides consultation over the projects. The person in a GIS consultant job also needs to complete projects with satisfying performance while achieving customer expectations. The person in a GIS consultant job, in conjunction with the business development manager, plans and formalizes proposals.
