An entry-level GIS specialist, often in a team environment, provides client and technical support under the direction of the project manager or a GIS coordinator. An entry-level GIS specialist applies knowledge of information system principles, spatial data processing function, spatial analysis of topological structured data, and computer programming languages and techniques to solve multi-discipline query and classification of spatial data. An entry-level GIS specialist develops complete GIS databases integrating graphic and database information to provide full GIS functionality. An entry-level GIS specialist serves as a team resource for analysis and program development with respect to GIS and related applications. A GIS specialist leads and coordinates the management of projects designed to develop new geographic applications systems and methods.
An entry-level GIS specialist should possess a bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, computer sciences, or a related field with demonstrated knowledge and skills in project organization, research, and specialized computer usage. An entry-level GIS specialist must have demonstrated skills using the arc GIS suite of products, and provide a wide range of GIS support services. Experience with GPS or GPS/GIS data collection is preferred for this job. An entry-level GIS specialist should also have the ability to work both independently and within a team.
