Want to Secure a Foreign Service Officer Job?

A Foreign Service Officer is a representative of the United States of America in foreign lands who serves as a promoter for the U.S. in different parts of the world. The FSO has five categories, namely Consular Officers, Economic Officers, Management Officers, Political Officers and Public Diplomacy Officers. Foreign Service officers are also called Diplomats; working at over 265 locations around the world. The FSOs help to build better relationships between the United States and other countries.

The job of a Foreign Service officer is not a simple daily routine job. The FSOs have lots of responsibilities to carry out in different situations, some of which are listed below:
  • Granting a temporary visa to a foreigner who wishes to enter the U.S.A.
  • Making constant endeavors to maintain and develop a friendly bond with national governments to serve U.S. interests and encourage its principles
  • Issuing replacement passports in case of loss to Americans and permanent residency visas to foreigners who wish to enter and reside in the United States
  • Persuading the country in which he or she works to relax its restrictions and extend support to American corporations who wish to manufacture, produce or do business in that country
  • Promoting economic partnerships, development and business between the various nations of the world and the U.S.
  • Providing medical, legal, and traveling advice and assistance to U.S. citizens
  • Maintaining reports, writing and delivering different documents to the U.S. authorities
  • Analyzing fundamental economic data, market trends and financial developments in the host country or region
  • Communicating the views of the U.S. Government to the host government and assisting in the development of the host country
  • Observing the host country from a first person perspective, writing the considered outlook of that country and submitting the observations for examination and consideration by officials who make important decisions regarding bilateral and international relations
A bachelor's degree from the law school, business school, in political science programs or international relations is the first step for aspirants to the Foreign Services. A post-graduate degree is further required for a decent posting. The candidates need to take a rigorous examination consisting of several papers and aptitude tests, after which the successful persons are called to the oral examination. The successful candidates with the highest marks are then selected for the highly prestigious Foreign Services.

Some skills that would be helpful to have are:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to speak more than two languages
  • Thorough knowledge of history, geography, governments, politics, world culture, current topics and other relevant subjects
  • Ability of writing with clear picture of the situations
  • Flexibility to work in any foreign nation
  • Capability of controlling critical situations, drawing on personal experience and also by consulting the U.S. Departments
  • Readiness to fly from one nation to another and work under different departments
  • High levels of commitment and dedication
  • Readiness to accept world-wide assignments
The salaries of Foreign Service officers vary according to education, work experience, and location. Their average salary can be roughly estimated at $90,000. Apart from the salary, a Foreign Service officer enjoys numerous perks and benefits.

The compulsory age of retirement for Foreign Service officers is 65. However, the experience they gather during their tenure in the Foreign Service endows them with several distinctive skills. The international knowledge and varied cultural experience Foreign Service officers gain make them highly sought-after persons and they have incredible demand in many organizations. So, they can work for other branches of the government such as the Defense Department, the CIA, the INS, the Commerce Department, or go into international business. They can also teach at the university level after retirement from the Foreign Service.
