A Foreign Service Officer is a representative of the United States of America in foreign lands who serves as a promoter for the U.S. in different parts of the world. The FSO has five categories, namely Consular Officers, Economic Officers, Management Officers, Political Officers and Public Diplomacy Officers. • Observing the host country from a first person perspective, writing the considered outlook of that country and submitting the observations for examination and consideration by officials who make important decisions regarding bilateral and international relations

A bachelor's degree from the law school, business school, in political science programs or international relations is the first step for aspirants to the Foreign Services. A post-graduate degree is further required for a decent posting. The candidates need to take a rigorous examination consisting of several papers and aptitude tests, after which the successful persons are called to the oral examination. The successful candidates with the highest marks are then selected for the highly prestigious Foreign Services.
