Geographic information systems (GIS) are computerized systems for collection, storage, analysis, manipulation, and presentation of a geographical location. GIS is an excellent technology for representation of geographical features. GIS is being used for developing systems like Spatial Decision Support Systems. GIS generally uses a digital method where a hard copy is fed to a digital medium which is converted via CAD (Computer Aided Program). Creating GPS maps, public interactive services like Google Earth and web mapping are some of the common life applications of GIS. GIS specialists normally have proficiency in mapping technology like the GPS or remote sensing.

A GIS specialist's role in an organization is highly technical and he should be able to develop and expand GIS services in order to meet the rising client's requirements. He should be able to provide high quality end user service. A GIS specialist should be able to use sophisticated software and 3-D modeling methods in order to modify or integrate the photos and present them in topographical, geographical, social, and economic data. They should be able to prepare maps, graphs, and charts effectively and quickly. Jobs will vary accordingly as per the requirement of the every employer; however a basic job duty or responsibility of a GIS specialist is to:
  • Integrate geographic data from variety from a variety of sources
  • Develop maps and charts for the collected data
  • Design and update databases of population, political boundaries, and physical boundaries like rivers, seas, mountains, etc. and also depicting them on maps
  • Good decision making
  • Updating and development of GIS packages
  • Should be able to understand the requirements of the client and must be capable of fulfilling them
For a GIS specialist relevant knowledge in subjects like: cartography, geography, computers, GIS, and mathematics is very much essential. This occupation is not that developed; once it is established completely more qualifications will be required for GIS specialist jobs.

Some experience with the GIS software would be beneficial in order to avail a job in an esteemed organization. Also one needs to have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience prior to working as senior GIS officer. Constantly developing one's skill with advancement in technology is very much advisable to grow in this sector.

GIS specialists have a good career prospects today and even in the near future. As it is a career where demands exceed supply, the opportunities in this field are enormous. GIS professionals are basically involved in the gathering of data and analysis for various sectors like oil and gas companies, construction, government, police, Defense organizations, environmental organizations, retail organizations, archeology, logistics, etc. Therefore there are lots of options for a GIS specialist to get employed with. As it's a new technology the opportunities are bound to grow in the near future. One can also set up their own firm after having enough experience and hire professionals under them. There are also opportunities to work across the world once you have gained experience. Applicants with good knowledge and interest in geography can find a good career in GIS. One can find many careers in GIS as one can work as a GIS analyst, GIS technician, GIS specialist, GIS consultant, GIS mapping, etc.

An average salary which a GIS Specialist can earn is around $40,000. For a new comer basic salary is around $25,000. The more you are experienced the better is your salary. One can earn as much as $80,000 and more.

GIS specialists have a great future with advancement in the technology like GPS. Also it's a new technology so opportunities will grow with time since still there's an area for exploration and GIS will help greatly in the management and analysis of this large amount of data for good understanding of the terrestrial process and better management of activities to maintain economic stability and environmental quality.
